In WFP3, a "project" was nothing more than a set of settings, but in WFP5 (as in e.g. Trados and OmegaT) a project is a specific set of folders and subfolders. You can choose the location of the project when you create it, but you can't move it from there. The TXLF files are in a subfolder of subfolder of that folder.

WFP5 TMs are, I believe (I suspect), not a single file but rather a set of folders with files and subfolders with files. This makes it very difficult to deal with TMs in WFP5. I'm not sure if you can move these TMs around. Again, you can choose the location of the top-level folder when you create a new TM.

The default location is somewhere, somewhere... perhaps My Documents... but I created a folder on my Desktop called "WFP5 Files" and then use that as the base location for all projects and TMs. When I complete a project, I zip it up.

Thank you for your reply, Samuel.

I've been wracking my brains over this all morning. I have been using WF Pro 3 for years and now I'm supposed to go through a new learning curve. So far, I'm not impressed.

Here's what I needed to do today: receive a TXLF file (one that I created before), check it, then send a TMX and the translated Word file to my client. Somehow I a usable file to send to the client (an SDLXLIFF file). As of right now I STILL have not found the the Word file generated by WF Pro 5. I finally generated a TMX file, somehow located it, then imported it into WF Pro 3.

In WF Pro 3 only about 80% of the target column was populated, i.e. about 20% of the segments were blank. I did a cleanup, then started copying/pasting the missing translated segments out of the WF Pro 5 file into the cleaned Word file.

Yuck. But yuck. Big yuck.

How do I exchange a translation job between Wf Pro and Memsource?

I've got a job from an agency and they want me to translate it in Memsource. Memsource is an environment that a) I'm not very familiar with and b) more importantly, does not give me access my huge Translation Memory and Glossary (which I know from the project subject matter that I will have a lot of matches).

I see on Memsource that I can download a bilingual MXLIFF file in either DOCX or TMX version. However, downloading and importing the bilingual DOCX version is unsatisfactory because, once in Wf Pro, it treats each target term in the bilingual document as though it were a source term. And when I download the bilingual TMX version, I can see no way of adding it to my Wf Pro project.

Does anyone know please: is there any way of downloading the bilingual file, importing it into my Wf Pro environment and then re-importing it back into Memsource?

Thanks

You can download the mxliff file, change the extension to .xlf and import it to WF Pro.

Before importing a file I usually check the language codes by opening the file in Notepad to make sure the language codes in the file coincide with the languages of a WF Pro project.

This is a simple way to import an mxliff file, but then you have to cope with tags that will be displayed incorrectly in WF Pro.

The thing is you need to download the mxliff file itself by clicking on the line saying "Bilingual MXLIFF".

Thank you so much for all this help. I saved it as MXLIFF and renamed it to XLF and also opened it in Wordpad and changed the source code from "es" to "es-es" to match my TM in Wordfast Pro. However, when I try to import it, I get a message saying "Please define filter type for the specified files" and then "Undefined" with a drop-down box with loads of file extensions with another drop-down box with loads of (the same) file extensions underneath...

Would you have any idea or what I need to do please? And also, what about re-importing it into Memsource? Hopefully you will know!

Many thanks again.

It is my understanding that this is not possible in WFP5. You have to export a TM to TMX, then edit it in a TMX editor (not supplied by the Wordfast company) and then import it again into the TM. In case you don't know, to edit a TM in WFP5 you have to create a dummy project and then add that TM to the project, and then select the option "open" (not "edit") the TM. You can filter segments based on a search term, but you have to click the segments individually and edit them individually -- you can't tell WFP5 to e.g. replace all instances of "color" with "colour" in the TM.

Is there a way to do this? Many of the english texts I work on are poorly written which not only results in poor translation but I also have to submit the English updated version as well as the translation. Typically, I look at a Source segment and change it then work on the translation.

I looked for a setting in WF that would allow me to do so but did not find anything.

Never mind... Found it. CTRL + ALT + K

Dear Milan,

Maybe it works in Wordfast Classic, it most certainly doesn't work in Wordfast Pro 3.

You also say you use other tools to do the clean-up. Could you tell me which ones? That might be interesting, as I'm the one who has to do the clean-up of the shared TM of my team.

Kind regards,

OK, but then they should call it "TM Previewer" and not editor ... ;-)
In any case, even as a previewer it really doesn't work all that well...

Locking segments in Wordfast Pro 3

Hi,

We sometimes have files pretranslated with a specific TM. We pretranslate 100% and fuzzy matches (up to 75%).

However, when we start translating the pretranslated document with our main TM, it sometimes happens that the main TM has a higher match than the 75% pretranslating. In that case, the pretranslation is overwritten by the translation from the main TM.
We don't want this to happen, we always want to keep the pretranslation and edit this when necessary.

Is there a way from preventing the main TM to overwrite the pretranslated segments automatically?
I know we can deactivate the option to leverage the next segment automatically, but that also means a lot of work, especially in bigger documents, to manually leverage each sentence.

Or is there a way to sort of "lock" or "protect" the pretranslated segments?

We work with Wordfast Pro 3.

Thank you in advance for your ideas!

Katleen

Hello,
I need your help, I have just created a new project in WFP5 and imported the file.
However, when I click on "open" or "translate", I get the following error message (x's added for confidentiality reason):
"xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx_txlf: XLIFF file validation was unsuccessful. File name: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx_IDML_TXLF-fr-FR#PE_BBASRM#1.idml (1).txlf. Reason: [error location: row:1 column:1155, reason:cvc-complex-type.3.2.2: Attribute 'gs4tr:xliff-module-version' is not allowed to appear in element 'file'.]

For me this is like hierogliphs.
Who can help me find the way out?

Million thanks in advance.

Dear Katleen,

the "clean-up" is a feature which update TM from bilingual document (RTF, DOC, DOCX) and make target document from bilingual one.

I am sorry, I use another tools for other features: conversion, merge, split and deleting of of duplicate TUs. This precisly not to same as clean-up.

Conversions TM to TMX: Wf2TMX, WfConverter, Xbench,...

Editing of bitext: AlignEdit (a part of LF Aligner), Olifant

Create TMX: TMX Maker (a part of LF Aligner), Heartsome TMX Editor,

Deleting of of duplicate TUs: Xbench, TMLookUp,...

Merge, split TMX: Heartsome TMX Editor (last presentation: picture at the very bottom of the site [url removed] )

Merge data: TMLookup,

Convert TMX to TXT: Heartsome TMX Editor, TMLookup, Goldpan Editor

Repair TMX: Heartsome TMX Editor, TMX Validator

Create TBX: Goldpan Editor

Some useful features are build-in in CATs I have been using.

Kind regards,
Milan

Exactly.
Besides this shortcut, this button can be found in the "Edit" tab. You can also add it to the segment toolbar.
The "+" and "-" buttons in the "Translation" tab allow to expand or shrink source segments, very useful.

First of all, I've used WfC since 2004 and never had a similar problem.
Today, it cleaned the first 4.000 characters out of 50.000 in a document, and so looking for a solution I found this thread.

The first part was ok, the rest didn't contain any hidden text though but only "normal" fonts, with {,}, >, < and so on, so I couldn't search for hidden text, and it was unthinkable to delete manually all the text of the source language (several thousand words...). I found myself in a nightmare.

Finally, I decided to run the original file again with the TM, and it worked! I noticed, though, that some of the latest corrections and some of the spell corrections were lost, so it still cost me quite some time but I felt very relieved!

For what it is worth, maybe trying this solution could work too for someone in the same situation.

Good luck with that.
I only use WordFast Classic, which I like for its simplicity. However, I recently got a new laptop and am having difficulty installing WFC, probably because the office suite is more recent, maybe 2019 (I don't have the laptop switched on at the moment). And I don't have time to troubleshoot at the moment, and I probably won't need it until Christmas anyway...
