Microsoft Translator with Wordfast Pro 5: problem entering key from Azure

I set up an account for Microsoft Azure and created a subscription for Microsoft Translator, but I am having trouble linking it with Wordfast Pro 5 on Windows 10.

When I attempted to enable Microsoft Translator in Wordfast, it asks for the key. To find it, I went to my resources for translation in Azure, and there is a tab called "Keys and Endpoint", which contains two keys to access the API. However, neither of these keys worked when I entered them into Wordfast.

Is there anything that I need to do in Azure to activate the keys, or is there another key I should enter?

When you go to Keys and Endpoint in your Congnitive Services resource in Azure, what endpoint and location are there? Here is what I can see there, right below my keys:

Endpoint:
Location: global

(Or are you using API keys created in Key Vaults in Azure? I don't think those can be used in Wordfast, at least for the time being.)

Also, if you go to Payment Method in your subscription (mine is Pay-As-You-Go) in Azure, have you got an active payment method there? I believe it's necessary, even if the Azure service you are using is free.

Post title: not able to select global

Hi David,

I think that region might be the issue. I attempted to select global for the region when I set it up, but I received an error and picked North Central US since that is where I live. The problem is that Azure Products by Region lists MS Translator as having non-regional availability.

Post title: How to create global Microsoft Translate API key

I have just tried creating a new API key. I could not create a global key for Cognitive Services. But I was able to create a global API key for Translator. Try the following to do the same.

In Azure home, type Translator in the search field at the top. Click Translator under Marketplace. Follow the steps to create the resource. Hopefully, you will be able to select “Global” for region, just as I was (in fact, Azure recommended “Global” for Translator).

When the resource is created, you will find your API keys under Keys and Endpoint. When you use one of the keys in Wordfast, I hope it will work!

Post title: User configured MT connector

Hello,

If you are following this thread, here's some news:
It is now possible to connect to virtually any MT you want in Wordfast Server.
This is a very handy gateway to connecting your MT to your CAT tool if your CAT does not have a specific connector for it.

Thus you can use WFS as a central point to use your MT in your CAT clients (Pro 5, Pro3, Classic, Anywhere, MemoQ, SDL 2019).

This could be useful to LSPs as well, if you acquire MT services, they can fed live to your translators.

Once configured, the MT is connected to the CAT client as if it were a simple Translation Memory. You just need to adjust your penalties.

I demonstrate this in a video with ModernMT connected to Wordfast Pro 5 as an example here:

This feature is also discussed in this thread:

Hi Hans.

Somehow the text of my original post got deleted. Luckily my handy Ditto Editor had copied it so I just pasted it back in.

Any ideas on my questions?

I'm new to WF Pro 5. I'm working on a large editing project and have a few questions and comments:

1) Search/Replace: how do I get keyboard shortcuts? In WF Pro 3 I could hit "R" and "N". For now I am doing a lot of mouse clicking.
2) How do I Replace without jumping to next item? I could do this in WF Pro 3 but apparently not in 5.
3) How do I jump to the first segment? The last segment?

4) When you do a Replace All, it doesn't tell you how many instances were replaced. Can this be fixed?
5) You have to click out of a segment to see a misspelled word underlined. Can this be fixed?
6) I can't highlight different parts of a segment by holding down the Ctl key. Can this be fixed?

1) Go to "Preferences" --> There you'll find all the shortcuts

3) You don't jump to first or last segment, you elegantly scroll... ;-)

1) The shortcuts I want are not listed under Preferences. When I hit Ctl-H and get the Find/Replace dialog, I can only Find/Replace by clicking my mouse, and clicking and clicking and clicking. In WF Pro 3 I just needed to hit either "N" or R" on my keyboard.

3) In WF Pro 3 I could just hit Ctl-Start or Ctl-End. Scrolling with the mouse is not so elegant to me. :-)

Thanks for your question 3), I just discovered that CTRL+Start / CTRL+End do work on the Mac. AFAIK this is undocumented.
And there's a Goto segment (CMD+segment number), too, but you have to know the segment number you want to go to.

Post title: What's the process for saving .idml file out of Wordfast?

Hello,

I'm a graphic designer working with a translator that uses Wordfast Pro 5. We have 21 English language workbooks in Adobe InDesign that he will be translating to Spanish. On our first test run, he was able to open the .idml file I provided and complete the translation. However, it appears that he can only save a .txlf file out of Wordfast.

Can anyone point us to a tutorial or user guide that shows the process of saving a .idml file out of Wordfast?

Thank you,
Roy

Hello,
They are using the wrong process. Do not use the "Save as..." icon, but instead the "Save File as Translated". Even better, use the Cleanup icon from the Current Project view to batch create target files and update the TM(s).
Best,
John

Thank you for the help. I was able to get Microsoft Translator to work when I created the resource with:

Resource group region - Central US
Resource region - Global

The problem occurred when I entered global for both the resource group and the resource region, which gave me the following message:

{"message":"The provided location 'global' is not available for resource group. List of available regions is 'centralus,eastasia,southeastasia,eastus,eastus2,westus,westus2,northcentralus,southcentralus,westcentralus,northeurope,westeurope,japaneast,japanwest,brazilsouth,australiasoutheast,australiaeast,westindia,southindia,centralindia,canadacentral,canadaeast,uksouth,ukwest,koreacentral,koreasouth,francecentral,southafricanorth,uaenorth,australiacentral,switzerlandnorth,germanywestcentral,norwayeast'."}

In addition, I added my debit card information even though I am using the free pricing tier (up to 2M characters translated per month).

Distinguishing between fuzzy match from MT and fuzzy match from TM

Topic: Distinguishing between fuzzy match from MT and fuzzy match from TM
Poster: Samuel Murray

Hello everyone

Is there a way I can see or generate a report that shows whether a 95% match came from the translator's own TM or from the client's TM?

I often get files for proofreading where the client had pre-translated the file against his own, reliable TM, and then the translator used MT (with the client's consent). But if there is an untranslated segment that is a 95% match for another segment that the translator translated via MT, it shows up in WFP5 as a "95%" match, in a way that is identical to if the 95% match came from the client's approved and reviewed TM.

I examined the source code of the TXLF file, but there doesn't seem to be any way to distinguish a fuzzy match from an unreviewed machine translation from a fuzzy match from a reviewed unit in the client's TM.

Any advice? I can't ask the client for the original, untranslated TXLF file.

Samuel

You most likely activated the companions feature by accident. It is activated by pressing Ctrl+Alt+M twice quickly. Thus, if you are trying to activate Show Memory with Ctrl+Alt+M and your fingers linger a little too long, it is possible to activate the companions. The companions feature adds information to the default Word template, Normal.dot. However, high security may block this and cause the crash. If you can't get Wordfast to run, try closing Word and then locating and deleting the file Normal.dot to reset it.
This has happened to me now with CTRL+ALT+G to show the glossary. But now I can't remove it. Everytime I start a translation and click ALT+DOWN the window pops out. I've tried CTRL+ALT+G+G but it doesn't make the window go away, it simply asks me if I want open another companion window.

Any suggestions?

Where does WF Pro 5 store everything?

Where does WF Pro 5 store all the different files such as TMs and TXLFs?

I know this sounds like a basic question, but compared to WF Pro 3 it gets very complicated.

My system for working on a project is to put my source and target files in one path (e.g. C:/translations/client/project) and my TMs in another folder (e.g. C:/translations/TMs/client).

WF Pro 5 puts important files in some sub-sub-sub folder that I can't find easily and is far away from where I really want them.

I also can't find the cleaned file. When I do a cleanup it seems that everything went fine, but I can't find the translated file.

Can someone shed some light on this for me?
