Good luck with that.
I only use WordFast Classic, which I like for its simplicity. However, I recently got a new laptop and am having difficulty installing WFC, probably because the office suite is more recent, maybe 2019 (I don't have the laptop switched on at the moment). And I don't have time to troubleshoot at the moment, and I probably won't need it until Christmas anyway...
Hi Neilmac
I gave up on Wf Classic long ago because you can do so much more with Wf Pro. And as much as I like to complain about it, I have just renewed my licence, so they must be doing something right. It's just a bit galling that they don't seem to put any effort to making usability improvements ;-)

except the name.

Yves Champollion, designer and author of WfC, is not involved at all in the development of WfPro.

The two applications have nothing in common. I prefer exporting a file from WfPro, translate it in WfC, and then reimport into WfPro and, if required, save it in the original format, rather than go through all WfPro hoops to create a project, TM, glossaries, deal with the multiple directories and subdirectories each project involves, and I won't even go into all the missing, counter-intuitive or just poorly designed feature of the application.

Is anyone else having trouble with WF Anywhere?
It has been unusually slow lately, the page and the segments take forever to load and I end up having to reload the page multiple times. It's slowing me down considerably.
I've tested my internet connection, tried using a different browser, cleaning my cache, but nothing seems to help. Is anyone else having the same trouble? Does anyone know of something else I can do to try and improve WF performance?

Thanks!

Fernanda

Nope, nothing tangible. Last week my licence run out, I'm not renewing it as none of the suggestions from customers are taken into account. And there are better tools anyway.

And to top it all up, to my knowledge WFP is the only CAT that stops working after the licence has expired. Studio, MemoQ, DVX cannot be updated, but, AFAIK, can be used ad libitum.

You say "better tools". For me, one tool is better than another not just on the basis of the extent of its capabilities but also on its usability, and - as a freelance translator myself - the extent to which it is focused on my needs rather than those of agency/client project managers...

I tried SDL Trados about 10 years ago and then again about 6 months ago - it is ridiculously complex and over-engineered and I would be loathe to use it. Memsource is OK, but only available online and having used it several times with one of my agencies, I've found it can be very slow moving from one segment to another. I tried MemoQ a few years ago, and can't remember why but didn't prefer it to Wordfast Pro. Sometimes it's a case of better the devil you know!

As I say, I just wish Wordfast Pro would take on board and correct its fairly obvious and simple usability shortcomings. I've reported about a dozen of them over the last year or two and the only one that has actually been implemented is the ability to increase the text size when doing a Live Preview.

I live in hope that some of the others will get done - for example, when I Remove a project or a document, I should have the option to fully *remove* it without having to root around system files; this is an issue of client confidentiality as much as anything. And when I Copy and Paste a term into a dictionary etc, I don't want all the formatting gubbins around it to be pasted too. Basic things like that....

Cheers!

Hello colleagues,

After failing to get WFC 6.03 then WFC 8.32 to properly work under MS Word 2016/Windows 10, I have purchased WFP 5 and I am now painfully trying to figure out the simplest basic functions while wadding through a swamp of exotic gimmicks I will never, ever, use.

One of the basic thing I am trying to do is to tell WFP to always add a new term (source-target) to multiple glossaries included in a project. I can't find the option in the preference as it was possible in WFC (some of my projects are relevant to multiple specific fields that are associated with their respective glossaries). Am I missing something or is there no other way than repeating the operation and successively changing the target glossary in between?

I think that, unless a glossary is marked as "Read only", a new term will be added to all glossaries, regardless of how many there are.

Subject to verification, of course, because I never checked.

I just checked again. Although both of my glossaries are shown as "selected" in the project and NEITHER is "read only", new terms are only added to the first in the list. In the pop up showing when entering a new term, only one glossary is indeed shown at the bottom.

This can only be something I have overlooked in the parameters/preferences (which I have basically not played with yet). Although, I would be surprised that adding new terms to ALL active and NOT READ ONLY glossaries would not be a default behaviour.

Anybody?

Unfortunately that only went a few days before reverting itself to "crash mode".

I also have the same issue on my 2020 iMac - again, the same, when you leave it for about 5 minutes (toast, loo break?) and it just stops reacting to input and has to be re-started. Whilst it recovers whatever you had typed, it also wastes time and, naturally, you also lose your place in the file you were PR'ing.

This DOESN'T happen on a MacBook weirdly.

Can I make an iMac emulate a MB?

Unintentional scrolling when using Wordfast 5 pro

Hi!

This is been happening for a while and is driving me nuts: Basically I'm using Wordfast 5 pro on the Edit view and sometimes when I'm slowly scrolling some way (up or down) it jumps to some random section. I try to compensate scrolling back but again it jumps to the same position making my work extremely uncomfortable.

Any suggestion on how to stop this behaviour?

Thanks!

Are you using a Windows computer (laptop) with a touchscreen? If so, that's the problem: the Windows touchscreen driver doesn't agree with Wordfast Pro 5. Currently, the only solution I'm aware of is to disable touchscreen, at least while you are working with Wordfast Pro 5.

Temporary File Missing

Hello all,

I've been working on a project on WordFast (5.17) for several days, and got to it again this morning, but the first time I tried saving my work, the following message appeared:

An error occurred. Cause: temporary file is missing. XLIFF:
[...]idml.txlf. Problematic file:
[...]txlf-[...]

I haven't removed anything, or changed anything since yesterday. Why is the file missing? This is an idml file that I uploaded directly onto WorkFast. Now it won't let me save my work, and I'm afraid of closing the project. This has happened to me once before on a small project, and I closed the project but it couldn't find it again. I had to create the project again (although my TM was able to fill the segments I had done).

What can be the reason(s) that this happens?

Thanks for any advice.

Caroline

I left it alone and browsed the web a few minutes (perhaps 8-10?) and unfortunately it still stops responding and has to be force quit.

Macbooks don't do this though. So strange.

I even allowed it to sit a few hours whilst 'we' had a sleep and it came back with the Mac as it should.

It possibly even feels snappier when swapping between segments too.

Thanks so much :)

It's June 6 and I just updated WF5 to the latest version.

So, it doesn't do this on my Surface laptop (Intel), but has always done so on this big monitor desktop. I literally feel like there is an egg-timer on the desk.

I never use MT in WF and the TM's are often just on this local machine - so I am going to rule out the remote TM idea.

It seems like the question needs asking - does anyone have this issue who does not have an AMD processor here?

On the 3700X, I am currently in PBO mode; but I often run a straight multiplier thru the bios; but so far the only combination I have not tried is cutting out some of the cores... (SMT)

Oh well, might as well give that a go then.
Hi James,

Can you check your PCs power saver mode if it is set for balanced or performance?
Uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' steps below:
Press Windows Key + S, and type Network and Sharing Center.
Click on the top result to open Network and Sharing Center.
Click on Change adapter settings.
Right click on Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
Click on the Configure button.
Choose the Power Management tab.
Uncheck the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
Restart your device and check if the issue persists.

Add Wordfast to your Windows Defender Exclusions list or any other firewall/antivirus program.

Let me know if these made any difference.

Thank you,
John
Hi John,

I have the same problem with Pro5 on win10. I've raised a ticket to wordfast team but this was not resolved and then I found this page. However, my PC's operation system does not come with a Network Power Management feature. I've called Lenovo technical support about this and what they suggested me about this was to re-install the entire system. But I doubt that, since re-install won't have the Network Power Management feature added on (because it's a pre-defined system that comes with the entire machine). What can I do, please? It's so frustrating to have Pro5 frozen every few minutes (translators do a lot of searches/cross-checks during work so we have to from time to time "go away" from the Pro5 software and work on something else). Now every time I work/walk away from Pro5, I become really nervous, always worring whether it'll freeze the next second. Please do help on this. Thanks!
