Is there a way to easily go to the previous/last translated segment?

Topic: Is there a way to easily go to the previous/last translated segment?
Poster: Magali Svitex

Hello,
I have started working on the translation of a book and am still new at WordFast (currently using WordFast Pro 5.12.1). I try to commit my segments to the TM regularly but always end up on the last segment (#1453 --a segment that has actually been populated automatically in case this might be relevant) and I have to scroll back up to the last segment that I have translated in order to continue working.

MY QUESTION: is there a shortcut to go back to that last translated segment easily or at least to go from translated segment to another translated segment so that I don't have to continuously scroll all the way back up :p

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Ctrl + Z in keyboard is the shortcut to go back to the last position quickly. I always use these key combination when the translated file is big or small.

I don't use WF Pro so have no idea of this is relevant, but Shift+F5 in Word will rotate through the last 4 to 5 most recent edits.

Do you mean that WFP5 jumps to the last segment every time you try to move to a new segment? That is very odd behaviour. Which keyboard shortcut to you use to move to the next segment?

I can confirm what Soonthon says: Ctrl+Z will undo the previous edit, even if that edit was in a different segment. It's not always easy to see what the undone edit is, if WFP5 jumps to the relevant segment, so you can press Ctrl+Y to "redo" the edit if you want to see what it was that WFP5 had undone.

According to WFP5's list of shortcuts, Shift+F5 should take you to the most recently edited segment, but I'm not sure if that works across sessions. Also, it would appear that you can sometimes use Shift+F5 repeatedly, if you use it in combination with Ctrl+Z.

I don't know if this is relevant but, further to Samuel's point about "across sessions", it is worth checking General Preferences -> Segment -> Open the last edited segment when opening a file. This means that, if you close a file and open it again, a minute or X days later, it takes you to the point where you were working. I find this has become more accurate with the last two updates.

Thanks for responding!

I meant to say that when I use the "commit all" button, I end up at the last segment. Thankfully, WFP5 does not do that each time I commit one segment :p

Ctrl+Z or Shift+F5 does not work for me but I should probably add that I work on a mac... Ctrl+Z actually closes the file! So if there is any mac users that can help, I still welcome input. For now I'll try to keep in mind the segments # and use cmd + G.

Magali, go to Preferences in Wordfast Pro 5, access the Shortcuts tab, and type last in the Search field. You should see the Last Modified Segment command in the list and its keyboard shortcut next it (if you want, you can even change the shortcut or assign one if there's none).

It's Shift+F5 by default on my Mac. When I press the keyboard shortcut (I actually need to press Fn+Shift+F5 with my keyboard), Wordfast takes me to the segment I last modified. I hope that's what you are looking for!

Hello and greetings to all of you!

I have worked with WordFast Classic for many years and want to work with WordFast Pro 5 either. Therefore I would like to import the existing translation memories from the Classic version into WordFast Pro 5. I proceeded exactly as it says in the manual, but always get the message "0 TUs have been imported" and the TM is completely empty. But the TXT file contains about 400,000 TUs...

Can someone please help me with this problem?

Many thanks in advance!

Axel

Hi,

I would try to export the contents of your txt TM as a tmx file from WordFast Classic and then I'd import the resulting tmx file into a newly-created WFP 5 TM.

Well, if this is the case, please try to export the TM as is as a txt file. Then, import the txt file into Olifant – Okapi Translation Memory Editor (prdownloads.sourceforge.net/okapi/Olifant-R00022.zip?download) and save the TM as a tmx file. Afterwards, you should be able to import the tmx into WFP 5.

What is the file size of the TMX file that you created? Does it contain all your 400 000 segments, or is it basically empty?

What are the language codes used in the TXT TM and the TMX TM? You can open the TMX file in something like Notepad to look at. Are the language codes in the WFP5 TM the same as in the TMX file?

I noticed today while editing an imported project that the timestamps that Wordfast automatically added to the notes were very weird. They were several (like 8-9) hours ahead but still were marked as EST (which is my timezone). My computer's clock is correct. What clock or timezone is the timestamping function based on - does anyone know? I looked for a setting but couldn't find one.

WF Pro 5 word count way off

Hi all,

Currently having an issue where our translators have to save docx files as rtf in order for WF to "read them" correctly.

For example a 4000 word document is being "read" by wf5 as 45 words. I believe it has something to do with the formatting, headers, footers etc but try as I might I'm not able to work it out. Saving as RTF means the file is read correctly and translated fine, but sometimes it's missing important content that was removed when the file was converted.

It wouldn't ordinary bother me, or my users if the workaround of saving to RTF worked ok, but the fact that sometimes it removes content makes it difficult to have this as a long term solution.

Image below of what we see, on the left hand side is all of the content that WF recognizes, this is all headers, footers and the like. But you can see in the preview that the document contains much more than what is shown on the left hand side.

I've had a trawl through the wiki, does anyone have any ideas?

The WFP5 TM can't exist without language codes.

Let's try this step-by-step again.

1. In WFP5, go to Quick Tools (it's an icon on the left that looks like a fork and a spoon), then go to the Analysis tab (don't ask why!), then in the Translation Memories section on the right-hand side, click Create Local (it's an icon that looks like a oil barrel with a bit of yellow sunshine).

This will create a local WFP5 TM. Unfortunately, you can't type in language codes -- that would be too complicated for WFP5's intended users. Instead, you'll have to type "English" and then scroll down to "United Kingdom" (and click it), and type "German" and scroll down to "Germany" (and click it).

2. When you've created the WFP5 TM, it should appear in the list of TMs on that same tab below the oil barrel icons. Then, click Import TM (the oil barrel icon with a yellow "up" arrow), select your TMX file, select the newly created WFP5 TM, and let it import.

You can also skip step 1 and select the "create new TM" option when you use the "Import TM" function, but then it'll prompt you to create a new TM anyway, so you might as well do step 1 anyway.

Is this what you've been doing?

Importing a SDLPPX project "Source locale is not supported"

Poster: Comunican

Am tearing my hair out here as I have been offered a big project in SDLPPX format - which I had believed could interoperate with Wf Pro.

However, when I try to import it, I get an error message saying "source locale es-x-mo-SDL is not supported" - a meaningless message to me. And there is no offer of help or advice....

Wf Pro manuals are no use - have looked at [url removed] and [url removed]

As suggested in the second of those tow links, I tried changing the file name to .ZIP and unzipping and then importing the file, but no joy there either: I get "Invalid source locale es-x-mo-SDL" message.

Does anyone know what is going wrong please? I would at least like to be able to look at the project and let the client know whether or not I can accept the project.

Many thanks for any help

Hi Axel,

a) I created a project English-Great Britain to German-Germany and tried to import TMX from OPUS

[url removed]

de-en 364 000 TUs

Results:
1. Language codes in TMX are "de" and "en", I edited it in Notepad to "DE-DE" and "EN-GB"
2. The direction of languages is reverted and "0 TUs have been imported"

b) I created a project German-Germany to English-Great Britain

Results:
1. TMX was imported, 364 005 TUs have been imported
2. In project file "de-en\data\index\ is TM: 528kB in 294 files.

Cheers,

Milan
