Wordfast Pro 5 - backing up

I keep my Wordfast Pro files on one drive on my computer and then run a daily batch program to move them to another drive as back up. However, this involves a lot of files - many of which I am sure don't actually need to be backed up, and really what I want to do is only copy the TMs and glossaries (seeing as they are the files that change and are most valuable). Does anyone know where they are located, please?

Also, do you know how to delete old, archived documents and associated WF Pro files since (illogically, in my opinion), Wf only offers two options: "Remove from the list only" or "Remove from the list and move the following resources to Archive folder"... so, does anyone know how I find the Archive folder and empty it, please?

Hello everyone,

I'm starting with Cat Tools and wordfast in particular, and iI have no idea how to create a TM: directly in Wordfast, or in a Word document? Do I have to use a glossary I've created before or a former translation with the source and the target texts? I don't know where to start....

Could anybody please help?

From within a project, if you click on "Project TM", it gives the actual location of the Translation Memory under "Location". If you click on "Project Terminology", it gives the location of glossaries in the same way. (Just checked this in both Mac and Windows.) For saving a copy of the TM, I tend to export to TMX and put it in a few places like OneDrive and DropBox, as well as on another computer. Restoring from this seems to work well.
The Archive Folder is supposed to be in the Projects Folder that, in my case, is in a folder called Wordfast Pro.

Hi everyone!

I apologise in advance if this question has already been answered, and if so, maybe you could point me to it, though I don't believe it has been.

I'd like to know whether it is possible to pretranslate an entire txlf with Deepl, rather than autopopulating each row as you translate. I know this can be done with Trados, so am wondering whether it's also possible with Wordfast.

I'm using Wordfast Pro 5.

There are some steps to take to achieve the goal:

1. Enable DeepL Pro in the WF 5 Settings.

2. Use the Analyze action to pretranslate a txlf file.

3. On the Project Analyze dialog, select the language pairs and files for analysis.

4. Select Pretranslate and any other options if needed.

5. Click Analyze.

Thanks very much, Andriy! I think I've got DeepL Pro set up - I've got my API and DeepL Pro enabled, but when I analyse, the only thing that I'm getting up are the tags - all segments are empty apart from some tags.

Hi again!

By ticking the "Use primary MT on no match segments needed" box in the Project Analyze window under "Pretranslate", I am able to pretranslate. However, files that are over ~500 words give me the following error message "leverager cause exception". Has this happened to anyone?

Hi there
Thanks for your help. I can find the overall folder for each project, but can't find the TM or specific file for the TM or Glossary - the folder shows only: core.lock, core.properties and then a data folder and a files folder.
But in any case, I've concluded it's best if I just keep my existing automated daily backup of everything rather than trying to fiddle about too much!

Sounds like you are looking at the TM folder. I have "core properties" and three folders, "conf" that is empty, "files" that contains only schema.1.json of 4 bytes, and "data2" with folder "index" with a large number of files. That's why TMX is good because it saves it in a single file that you can still open in a text editor if you want to adjust the language. Glossaries are similarly complex, though mainly text files, so saving them as TBX can be handy, though mine started life as Excel files, so I keep those for reference.

Is there an easy way to dictate commands to WFC, things like “go to next segment”?

I’ve been dictating into WFC for years but doing the commands on the keyboard and I’ve finally decided enough is enough. (Fossil!)

I've never gotten command dictation to work in a useful way, in any CAT tool or application, neither with Dragon nor with Mac Dictation.

I found the best solution is to assign "go to next" to a mouse button (a gaming mouse with extra buttons comes in handy). I also have "go to next" assigned to a foot switch, for hands-free operation.

I use WFC and Dragon all the time, but I must admit I never use many commands except for "scratch that". I know that you can set Dragon up to do dictation only and ignore commands, which may be how I have it configured at the moment, I don't really know. If I want to move to the next segment - or anywhere else - I just click on it with the mouse.

For some reason, my Dragon is reluctant to write "Next" at the beginning of a sentence. I always end up just typing the bugger in...

PS: I just remembered, on my main PC (this one) my Dragon Premium crashed one day and I was getting no joy from the support or forums, and because I was in a hurry, decided to purchase a more basic version. That's the one I'm using at the moment, and all I can see in the options is how to set the length of pause required before issuing commands. There were probably more options in the premium version, which is still working on my other computers. In fact, I've just looked and in the Premium version you can activate commands in the top right corner settings.

You'll need to look into macros. There are a few ways to create these in dragon, the simplest being to 'record' the key strokes/mouse clicks you use to enter the command. Then you can assign a voice command like 'go to next' to it. I had mixed experiences in Studio, but my 'go to next' macro worked pretty well (have since abandoned dictation altogether because I simply couldn't get used to it).

Sooo... In August 2018, I bought a Wordfast Pro licence but did not set it up properly. It seems ridiculous, but I was too busy. I was going through a phase where many of my translations were from horrible old pdfs and were not repetitive.

I gather the licence is valid for 3 years so I am still within in the window and haven't lost my money. So that is a relief because I am on a budget.

At this time, I find that many of my texts are repeated or similar and are almost always in Word.

So now my Wordfast is staring at me and I know I need to use it.

If you were in this position, would you be able to "retroactively" create a memory and a glossary from the multiple translations you already have?

Where would you start with such a task?

This entitles you to both Wordfast Pro 3 and Wordfast Pro 5. Which of these two are you now trying to use? (They are very, very different from each other... each with its own strengths and weaknesses.)

Creating glossaries are best done on the fly, i.e. while you work. There is no tool of feature that can create glossaries automatically -- in (almost) all CAT tools, all glossaries are created by manually typing or selecting the term in the source language and target language and adding the term to the glossary.

You can try to create glossaries using old translations, but the problem is that it's very difficult to decide which terms you want to save in the glossary. Of course, when you have spare time, you can read through old documents and add more terms to your glossaries, but this isn't something that you should focus on if you have little time.

Creating TMs is done by a process called "alignment". For this, you need to find an aligner that you enjoy working with. Basically, you load both the source file and your translation into the aligner, it creates a table of the sentences and their translations, and when you're satisfied that all sentences are lined up correctly, you generate a translation memory from it.

As far as I know, neither WFP3 nor WFP5 have a built-in aligner. There is a simple aligner in [url= [url removed] ]WFA[/url] (Wordfast Anywhere, which is free and online), but it only works if the two files are perfect "copies" of each other. A free aligner that is often recommended, is [url= [url removed] ]LF Aligner[/url].

(It looks like Michael Beijer hasn't created a list of aligners yet, so I think [url= [url removed] ]this thread[/url] is the closest to a list.)

That’s quite a lot for a fairly minor benefit that might not even work...

Thanks Samuel. I gather it is Wordfast Pro 5. So bad that I had to look that up in my 2018 emails. Years ago I had used a very basic Wordfast so hope Pro is not ridiculously complicated as that is the main thing I remember about Wordfast as opposed to other TMs.

I have quite a project on my hands...looks like I will be investigating a free aligner of some sort.

I do have a list of terms I am sure about that come up a lot so maybe I should start with those glossary-wise.

I may also complete a translation I have done before (but this time using Pro) to get me started on an on-the-fly TM. I think this project will take a good few days but it will pay off in the long run and make up for my procrastination thus far. :-)
