Dear colleagues,

I wonder if anyone has encountered such a problem and/or hopefully knows how to resolve it.

Having translated my document, I saved my translated file just to see that large chunks of the translated text are missing. What is more puzzling is that footnotes and headings are in place but not the main body of the document. Moreover, these missing chunks are not sporadic: it is consistent paragraphs, sections and chapters in the middle of the document, and then back to normal.

I hope this makes sense.

This sometimes happen with some CAT tools. The chunk of text might have been marked as hidden. After translation and cleaning up, try and search the document for hidden text using "Find and Replace" in Word. Find ->Click Format tab -> Select Font -> Tick Hidden -> OK. When you come across any hidden text, unhide them by selecting them and untick "hidden" in the Font dialogue box.

1. Could it be that it has white text colour on a white background?

With Word documents, I find that translated text can be hidden off the page (to right, to left, above, below) or outside text boxes. For example, when more text is needed in the target language than the source, Wordfast keeps page breaks according to the source text, so if it does not fit in it will disappear. Within a text box, extra words or longer words tend to be hidden. One can usually make the text appear by making it smaller, by dragging the edge of the box, by copying and pasting somewhere else in the document. I tend to spend a good deal of time on this at the end of a job, but am not complaining.

Further to my last point, you can sometimes find hidden text underneath an image. Always keep a copy of your translated/corrected document before trying to fish anything out.

WFP5: Copy source to target

ALT+F12 copies selected source text to target. Copied text should be inserted at cursor position but is systematically inserted at the end of the segment which is not always what you would want. Could this be changed in one of the next releases?

Hello,

While at the Wordfast Forward Conference, many asked for DeepL integration in their CAT tool.
At the moment of this post, it works perfectly in Wordfast Anywhere.

Hello,

I'm just starting to use WFP 5 but when regularly copying a word from a segment into my Safari browser I get some weird additional characters.

Fore example I copy the word "Germany" and I paste it in my browser and I get

<b realtype="bold">Germany</b>

Could anybody help?

Hi Patrick,

I'm using WF5 on a Mac and I don't get that problem. I've just re-checked.

Maybe in the source segment there are tags which are not viewed, but there are, so when you copy/paste you also copy/paste the tags.

Anyway, I'm using WF5 as well, but there are still some issues.

Actually yes, these are definitely tags. I just tried on a different file and I can copy normally.

Though I still not know why the tags are kind of "glued" on the respective word.

Lucia, I'm back here now and for sure there will be some more issues.

Maybe you should check un the tag preferences if tags are setup without a space around, I mean around the word they refer to.

I've defined different segment colours for Autopropagate and Committed (after committing to TM to go to next segment).

But if I pass over an Autopropagated segment (below) it takes the colour of the committed Segment. This is not good as at the end of the translation and you check the segments, you don't realize which segments are autopropagated.

Any idea?

You might wish to read about Hyper-V, VmWare Player, VirtualPC, etc., and follow this path.
There are free or affordable solutions which allow you to run an OS within an OS. With all the old apps, of course.

I'd appreciate a bit of help with quoting for a translation using Wordfast Classic.

I'm about halfway through translating a fairly long text. Now that client has sent a second one that seems to have a lot of similarities. It's for the same project. The client wants an idea of when I'll be able to deliver the second translation - he's not too fussed about cost; more about getting it asap. Is there any way I can get Wordfast to tell me how similar this text is to the one I'm already working on? I can't figure out a way to analyse the second text taking account of the segments in the first text that aren't yet in the TM.

I hope that makes sense and someone has a solution. Maybe the best I can do is a WORD compare of the source texts?

Just charge the same as for the first one, and tell the client you'll deliver ASAP. I wouldn't waste any time "analysing" or estimating. Just get the job done. If you feel a discount is merited at the end of the day, you can always give them a rebate. At least, that's my modus operandi.

I'd love to do that, neilmac. I always decide for myself what discount to give him anyway, so that would present no problem. He's a regular client and isn't actually asking about the price.

The problem is that he wants it by Friday, at exactly the same time as the first one. And another client wants 240 pages of English proofread for then too. I simply don't know how I'm going to fit it in if it's predominantly new words. OTOH, if it's pretty much a rehash of the first one then I might be able to do it in a fraction of the time.

He's going to get charged a rush rate, that's for sure! But I don't want to promise what I can't deliver. I'm too old to burn the midnight oil (for a client, anyway :) ).

I am not a user of Wordfast Classic but searching a bit I found this on [url removed] #Analyse

Repetitions

Repetitions : this term refers to repetitions found within the document(s) that was/were analyzed (this does not concern the translation memory). For example, if a same sentence (segment) appears 3 times in the set of analyzed documents, the repetition counter will show 2 repetitions.

Maybe this can be useful.

In Wf Classic, click on Tools, then Analyse and have the two documents analysed.
Wordfast will tell yo how similar they are, that's all:-) It will compare it of course with a TM, but you can use for that whatever TM you want.

I forgot to mention that the documents must not have been segmented yet, so use the original of the first document (before segmentation).
