Post title: Problem solved...
It seems that to fully uninstall all the Office settings on a Mac (which I am new to) you have to delete all the files individually - support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768. After doing that and reinstalling Office the issue seems to have disappeared. Now let's hope that I don't again press whatever strange combination of keys I must have pressed to start the problem!
