What kind of crashing have you experienced, Joanna? If it's crashing on quit, that's a known problem. The latest beta (release candidate) seems to fix this problem.

Jeff - it just suddenly auto-quits mid work. Usually when I'm doing something with the glossaries rather than actually processing segments.

Large translation memory (.txt) does not load | Good idea, but...

Post title: Good idea, but...

I exported the .txt to .tmx successfully (with a list of error messages that seems manageable). When "connecting" the .tmx to a project, though, Wordfast switched the source language of the translation memory so that it will not work with the text I tested.

Meanwhile, I can run a "pre-translation" on a server at the office, then download the Wordfast file to my computer to finish the job. That accomplishes the pre-translation I want out of this huge translation memory and I can use the client translation memory on my computer as I work to capture new segments as I work.

Note: I only ever work off copies of the translation memories we have. I only write revised and validated segments back to the main translation memories.

Regardless, any other ideas, suggestions and questions are welcome.

How should I organise my projects in Wordfast Pro version 5?

Topic: How should I organise my projects in Wordfast Pro version 5?
Poster: Comunican

Hi all
As long as I've been using Wordfast Pro, I've had only three projects - one for each of my language pairs. I archive each document once I've finished translating it, saved it back as a Word file and sent to the client.
I've now been told that such large projects are not the best way of organising files in Wordfast Pro and that it is better to set up a Wf Pro project "for each project".
The problem is: most of my client projects are relatively small and involve only one or two files at a time (I rarely get extensive multi-file projects). So, if I follow this advice, I will be constantly creating projects (which is tedious - unless I'm missing some easy way to do it!).

What advice do others have about organising files and projects, please?

And on a related point: how large do you allow your TMs and Glossaries to get? Is it OK to have one large TM and one large Glossary for each language pair? Or should I be splitting them down? Actually, with my busiest language pair, I now have four TMs, with the first three going back years, and used as read-only - in the unlikely event that I get a load of matches to make my translation day :-)

Would be interested in others' opinions please?
Thanks!

Since WFP3 and WFP5 organise files in utterly different ways, it is really important for the answer to this question to know which version of Wordfast Pro you have.

I use WFP5 mostly for GLP packages, so in my case all client projects are individual CAT tool projects, and I must tell you, I dislike it. WFP5's project folder structure is insanely complex and WFP5's project template capabilities are very limited, so having individual CAT tool projects for individual client projects is a recipe for irritation.

In fact, the cumbersomeness of WFP5 folder structure is what makes me think twice about using it when I need to decide whether to translate a loose file in Trados, WFP5 or MemoQ.

Did the people who gave you the advice explain to you why they believe that it is better to use separate CAT tool projects for each client project (or did they explain what's wrong with recycling CAT tool projects, as you have been doing)?

Hi Samuel, and thanks as always for your interest and help with Wf Pro matters... I agree the file structure is very complex and I really can't be bothered to set up a separate project (which is a right pain because you have to specify all the TMs and the glossaries you want to use etc.
The person who recommended separating them out by project works at Wordfast, but he wasn't very specific other than to say "statistics and progress (by which he means calculation of percent complete) can be inaccurate in projects of that size, especially if you keep adding files to them".

Based on what you've said, I think I will start creating new projects every month for each of my language pairs. It seems like a reasonable compromise?

Cheers

Are statistics and progress indicators important to you?

As far as I know, you can analyze a file even if it is not part of a project.

As for progress indicators... well, what I do is to export the source text to a separate DOC file, and remove duplicate lines (you can do that in Excel, I think, but I use an AutoIt script). Then, at various times during the translation, I simply open that file and delete all rows above the point where I'm currently at, and do a word count. It's a manual method but I don't wonder *every minute* how much progress I have made so far, so it's good enough for me.

You're obviously farrrrr more technical than me!

The stats and progress indicators are not massively important to me, but I had reported a bug whereby even though I had completed a project (and happily sent it off to the client), Wf Pro 5 was still saying only 86% complete. It was when I sent the project files to Wordfast that they advised keeping them smaller...

I take their point about projects not getting overly large and have already taken to turning active (read-write) TMs into a series of read-only TMs as a way of not overloading the system.

So, I think maybe just setting up a new project every now and then should solve the problem. That's what I've just been doing, so it will be interesting to see how it goes.

Thanks again!

The issue with Linux is you need to install the dependency libraries for Wordfast to open.

Depending on the flavor of Linux OS install:
‘sudo apt install libconf2-4’
or
‘sudo apt-get install –f’
or
‘yum install libX*’

Let me know if you need any help.
None of these commands worked for Ubuntu 20.04.1 (Focal Fossa) , but there is a similar command that worked, which is: sudo apt install libgconf-2-4 After that I ran the command ./wordfast in the directory where the files are located. Note that the only difference between ‘sudo apt install libconf2-4’ and 'sudo apt install libgconf-2-4' is the hyphen between 'libconf' and '2'.

FYI, the command I used to find it is 'apt-cache search libgconf'. The command 'apt-cache search [keyword]' is used to search for packages.

$ apt-cache search libgconf
libgconf-2-4 - GNOME configuration database system (shared libraries)
libgconf2-dev - GNOME configuration database system (development)
libgconf2-doc - GNOME configuration database system (API reference)

$ sudo apt install libgconf-2-4

Recently I had the same problem. I reinstalled the fresh Java, even two: for 32-bit and 64-bit system (because I have Windows 7, 64-bit). I reinstalled Wordfast. Nothing helped! The only thing that helped: you need to go to Wordfast folder in Program files and delete the file Wordfast Pro.ini (it's better to cut and paste this file to some other folder... just in case). And that's all - my Wordfast Pro is pretty much alive again!

I'm baffled.

I think it will be interesting to many who are starting to check out the Online Training section, anybody purchasing through there will get 3 full training sessions for free. Nice!
The downside is that they will have to put up with me for the training JJJJJ
Look forward to see you all there :)

Wordfast Classic 5.92n preventing hard break in target segment

Poster:Ömer Maraş

Hi folks,

as an "old school WFC fan", I've been using WFC 5.55y for years now. But since a recent upgrade to Windows 10, that specific build stopped working (anybody know a way to make it work again??)
So I moved to WFC 5.92n, which seems to work ok so far. However, in WFC 5.55 I could insert hard breaks in the target segment (during translation of longer sentences I usually break it down into segments, deal with them, then combine them and at the end I "ALT+down arrow" to the next untranslated segment). This seems to be disabled now. I wonder, why this happens and how I can enable it again. Anybody have any ideas?

I tried this on Windows 10 64bit, on Word 2019 and also on my favorite Word XP - both a "no go" so far..

I'd appreciate any help (would be marvellous if I could use WFC 5.55y also on my new system)...

Hello everyone

I understand that the official Wordfast support team prefer to make use of Facebook groups, but I personally prefer to ask for and offer support via email, and to discuss Wordfast related matters via email. So I created an unofficial Wordfast users group at Groups.io. Please feel free to join. I also intend to invite a number of old Wordfast group participants to the new group in due course. Also, if you know of any other Wordfast mailing lists apart from the main English ones, do let me know (or let them know).

The new group's URL is:
It is also possible to read messages and post messages via the web.

To join the new group, visit or send an empty e-mail to " ".

Thanks

Since I have Word 365, WFC does not seem to work. I looked at the manual for version 8 (which I downloaded now), but cannot make sense of it. I tried to enable all macros, but ctr+alt+W always gets an error message.
