Wordfast Classic 6.99 wordfast.ini target segment font setting

Taking advantage of the work from home licensing arrangement, I have installed the last version of Wordfast Classic that actually works for us - 6.99 - but this version has always had a problem that changes to the wordfast.ini are often not saved.

The workaround is manually editing the wordfast.ini, but the lines you need to input are not always obvious.

I remembered that adding a tab and {space} to the end of the Segmentation line is necessary for the "Insert the following characters..." field, but I cannot recall what line needs to be added or modified to set the "Target segment font".

Can anyone help out? Thanks in advance!

I'll have a more comprehensive look later, but for now, if I add "asdf" as the target font in 6.03t, then the INI file shows this:

SegmentColors=asdf 0 0 0 0 0,0,0

(with a tab after "asdf")

Why don't you just search the old Yahoogroups messages? Oh, wait... the Wordfast company did not want those messages to remain available...

Yes, I have found that the trick is to click the "X" after you've made any single change, or to click the "X" before you move to the next tab. This is applies to my current version (6.03t) as well. If you've made a change, and click the "X" and it doesn't prompt you to save the INI file, then your edit didn't stick. On the other hand, if you edited a setting in one tab, moved to another tab, made an edit, and then clicked the "X", it may prompt you to save the INI but it will only save the edit on the current tab or the most recently edited tab.

Your first reply was helpful, thanks, I'll give that a try after the long weekend here.

Unfortunately I don't get the prompt to save even when immediately closing the window without switching tabs, so that workaround doesn't always work (although I did notice the same problem about switching tabs).

Thanks John! This is something that will prove very useful in this situation!

Other information that may prove useful for those not already aware:
All-year round and for many years, Wordfast provides free licenses for 2 types of organizations:
_Humanitarian
_Educational

If you are part of a humanitarian organization, you can check this page: [url removed]
Please pay close attention to the definition of humanitarian at the bottom of the page: “NGOs and Humanitarian Organizations: note that gratuity does not apply to all "non-profit organizations" (like associations, religious or cultural concerns, local government, etc.) but specifically to humanitarian NGOs, duly registered as such.”
If you’re within that definition of NGO, there’s a link to contact at the bottom “write to us”

All Universities can also apply, to Wordfast Academic program. This program allows students to have licenses for their laptops and thus work from home. This is available all-year round but may make even more sense now. Check this page for further information:
[url removed]
These tools make for collaborative work and teaching through Wordfast Server, Wordfast Anywhere (free) etc.
If your University needs it, teachers or university representatives can contact. If you’re a student, do not contact directly, please approach your teacher to contact, clicking the “contact us” link.

For connecting Wordfast Pro 5 to remote TMs and glossaries and share them for free see this video: [url removed]
For connecting Wordfast Pro 3 to remote TMs and glossaries and share them for free see this video:

Of course, there is also Wordfast Anywhere, the free online collaborative tool allowing to share TMs, glossaries and even have different people working on the same file simultaneously.

So these are a few more options to keep working and learning without undue risk exposure.
Keep safe!

My bests 😊

I would like to join several TM's that have different language settings.
I work with different language variatons, like standard French and Belgian French to Belgian Dutch or standard Dutch. This means I have TM's in FR/FR-fr/FR-be to NL/NL-be/NL-nl. Is it possible to adapt the language settings and join the TM's into one standard?

Post title: Using TMX?

Not really an answer, but I have had a good measure of success adjusting TM language in the first line of a TMX from an agency by using a text editor. I notice that Wordfast 5, when importing TMX, now gives the option of "Import into existing TM". Just wondering if one could export the various TMs as TMX, edit, and re-import. Sounds a bit curious and there must be a better way.

Thanks all, I had contact with WF 5 Help and they stated it wasn't possible to change language settings. The best thing is to use a TMX editor. WF is working on it... To be continued?

Text appearing in Wordfast 3 but invisible in Word

Hello,

I have translated a text from a word document (docx) in Wordfast 3. In the txml has appeared a part of text which I cannot find in the correspondong source file. After converting, it did not appear in the target file either. Regarding the context, it would be important for me to see the original layout of this part of text which consists of disjointed keywords (I guess it is a table). I am sure it must be somewhere in the word file, because if not, it would not appear in the txml neither.
I have been working with Wordfast 3 since 2011 and never had this problem.

If somebody know how to make visible this hidden text in the source and target word file (docx), thank you in advance for letting me know!

Kind regards
Doris

It could be hidden text. Try to select all (Ctrl+A) and untick the Hide box in the Font menu.

There may be another possibility, as some Word files in compatibility format contain two versions of the same text under the covers. Some software could have corrupted the file and changed one of the versions but not the other. One of my gripes with MemoQ is that it imports and displays both versions so it would be possible for the translator to store two different versions in the target Word file.

Do you have "drawings" enabled in the view options? This setting will allow you to see text boxes, and in some files, text boxes are hidden by default.

Or, could this text be comments (the "tracked changes" kind) that are simply hidden?

If you click anywhere in the Word file, then do Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, and then Ctrl+V into Notepad, does the mystery text show up?

Post title: workaround using export and editing the language codes

Hi Krista,
I just tested out if a workaround would be possible and it seems to be the case.

I tested "combining" a de-DE TM into a de-AT TM.

1) Following the example with two TMs you would have to export all translations units of one TM (in my test the de-DE one) as *.tmx. To do this, go to "Quick Tools" in WF5, select the TM on the right and choose export.

2) Open the exported *.tmx in WordPad and replace all occurrences of "DE-DE" to "DE-AT". Save the file. (Obviously you would have to change the language codes according to your needs).

3) Choose "Import TM" under "Quick Tools" in WF5 and select the previously exported and edited *.tmx as well as the TM you want it imported to.

This seems to have worked as far as I can tell. I now have all the de-DE units in my de-AT TM.

If you are not sure, what the language code is, you can alway export your TM as *.tmx, open it in WordPad and see what language code it shows.

Please give this a try if you have some minutes to spare and let me know if that works for you. It is a little cumbersome, but might save you a lot of time later on.
If you run into any problems, let me know.

Best,

XtS

Post title: not a network issue

For anyone who's interested....

I tried all the proposed steps, but the problem still persists. Also, it it pretty unlikely to be a network isse (as fas as router configuration or other configuration of devices/software other than Windows on the PC in question is concerned), since the Notebook (where there is no problem) is connected to the same network and network devices and thus uses the same configuration without any problems.

I have already been in contact with the Wordfast support over this and they are aware of the problem (albeit it only affecting very few users), but are working on fixing more urgent matters at the moment before trying to address this.

I just hope they get to it sooner rather than later, since due to this bug it is virtually impossible for me to use WF5 Pro on my PC.

Thanks XtS, that worked. The WF helpdesk explained that you can use the standard language in any regional variation. So if you use DE without any regional specification, you should be able to use it with any of the other regional variations. IT is quite cumbersome indeed to have to export and edit, but it is certainly worth the effort!

Post title: Also in Wordfast 5

I have also seen something similar in Wordfast 5, for the first time last Friday, having used WFP5 since it was invented. Also working from French, I have in the first few segments, "Masking Area, Do not move margin(s)" several times in that language. Not in comments or hidden text, not visible in Word output or in a text editor. Seems to be in every file, with both .doc and .docx files in the project. Looks a bit like CSS language for web. It precedes three tables on the first page. I suspect it is a Word oddity rather than a bug in Wordfast, and I intend to ignore it, not least because the margins will have to move, as the text extends out of the printable area.
