The "Companion" feature was experimental at the time of your version and it has evolved since. Therefore its behaviour in the current version (6.13) doesn't match that of your version (5.92). There is only one mention of the companions in the Reference manual, which still uses the old-style icons:
As I said, in the current version, the shortcut to close the companion window is mentioned in the title bar of said window:
"2 x Ctrl+Alt+G" really means: press Ctrl+Alt, keep them down, then press G twice in a row.
